Clear sky HDRI

  • 91 published HDRIs at HDRI Hub carry the clear tag, priced $8 to $25.
  • Resolutions run from 4096x2048 up to 20000x10000 pixels.
  • At a 45 degree sun elevation, a shadow equals the height of the object casting it; at 30 degrees, the shadow is about 1.7 times the object's height.
  • A clear sky HDRI keeps a single visible sun disc, unlike an overcast HDRI where the light source is spread across the whole sky.

91 published HDRIs at HDRI Hub carry the clear tag, priced $8 to $25, at resolutions from 4096x2048 to 20000x10000. Each one shows a blue sky with a single sun position, so rotating the file changes where the shadow falls and how long it is. They suit renders that need a defined, directional shadow rather than flat, even light.

What is in this collection

HDRI Hub lists 91 published clear-sky HDRIs, priced $8 to $25, at resolutions from 4096x2048 to 20000x10000. Examples include HDR 149 Forest, a forest clearing under a blue sky; HDR 003 Meadow 3, an open field scene; and HDR 104 Sidewalk, an urban sidewalk with a clear horizon.

When to use clear sky HDRIs

  • Renders that need a hard, defined shadow with a clear edge, such as product shots or facade studies.
  • Matching a specific sun angle for a shadow study at a given time of day.
  • Reflections on glass or metal that need a single bright light source rather than diffuse sky light.
  • Daylight scenes where the shadow length itself communicates the time of day.

Rendering notes

Shadow length follows the sun's elevation angle: at 45 degrees the shadow equals the object's height, at 30 degrees it grows to about 1.7 times the height, and at 10 degrees it can stretch past 5 times the height. Rotating a clear-sky HDRI on its vertical axis moves the sun and changes shadow direction without changing its length, since length depends only on elevation, which is fixed per file. Pick a file with the sun already at the elevation the shot needs, or blend two files at different times of day if the renderer supports it.
